There is
strong interest in establishing a wharf at Takapuna Beach for
"water transport" links on the Waitemata Harbour, not just
for ferry services, but also to provide for tourism,
recreational use by boaties, and for marine safety purposes
i.e. Coastguard - Police -Boating Clubs.
Takapuna Beach was well served by ferries in the early part of the
20th century prior to the Harbour Bridge with a wharf
located where the current boat ramp is. A new wharf could be
built on that site again at comparatively minor cost in the
overall Auckland regional transport scheme (i.e. less than
$1M). By offering an alternative water means of public
transport, and developing links to Browns Bay and Gulf Harbour, this would provide a significant alternative to
congested roads in coming years. We have the biggest open
motorway on the doorstep of Takapuna Beach …..the Waitemata Harbour…..but
it is totally under-utilised.
Feedback from many segments of the community including
tourists, commuters, Takapuna/Milford residents, the
Takapuna Community Board and the Takapuna Beach Business
Assn support access to/from Takapuna Beach via the sea. Wharves at
Takapuna Beach (and Browns Bay) would greatly enhance the Auckland
region's connections with the Hauraki Gulf and provide
significant commercial tourism opportunities to capitalise
on one of the world’s finest harbours.
The ARC (and its ARTA transport entity) have wharves at
Takapuna Beach and Browns Bay listed as future possibilities in
their long-term transport plans. North Shore City Council has
allocated funds for a feasibility study on wharves at
Takapuna Beach and Browns Bay. But these bodies are looking out to
the next decade in terms of construction.....when this wharf
could and should be a reality by 2007/2008 to provide for
the massive growth projected for Takapuna Beach with the current
apartment and office projects that are underway.
Please support the Takapuna Wharf project.......which will
open up the North Shore to the Waitemata Harbour for all to
enjoy.
